I was wandering in La Cadiere some years back when an old lady popped her head out from the window of her house and sold me a bottle of her homemade vin d'orange. I fell in love with it and was heartbroken when we came to the end of our bottle. Since then I have been on a quest for a replacement. Sadly the old lady has not reappeared. Here is the closest approximation I have:
Drink up David!
Ingredients:
- 2 Oranges - if you can find one seville orange use it and one good sweet juicing orange. Remember only to get organic ones as the skin is vital to the taste and outcome of your wine so sprayed goods will not produce what you need.
- 1/4 lemon
- 1 litre of dry white or rose wine
- 200g /7 oz caster sugar
- 1/2 vanilla stick or cinnamon stick
- 1 glass of marc or grain alcohol or grappa
Wash and chop oranges and lemon and mix with sugar. Allow to mascerate. Add the remaining ingredients and leave to stand for 40 days. Filter and bottle the wine.
Serve over ice as an aperitif.
